Q Experiment 10 - Decomposing Baking Soda • Points 10 • Submitting a file upload Today we start Experiment 10. You can find a .pdf copy of the Experiment in the Laboratory Manual Module. This lab is considered a "wet lab", as we use chemicals and laboratory equipment to collect the data. The lab is designed to let you measure the amount of reactant used and the amount of product formed in a decomposition reaction - the decomposition of Sodium hydrogen carbonate, or baking soda. In Part A, we use our data to calculate the Actual Yield of one product that forms - the solid Sodium carbonate. After determining the Theoretical Yield via stoichiometry, we use the values to calculate the % Yield of sodium carbonate product. In Part B, we decompose a sample of baking soda that's part of a larger mixture. We use our data to calculate the original mass of the mixture, and the mass of the water and carbon dioxide products that form. Via stoichiometry, we calculate the mass of baking soda in the original mixture, and use that value to calculate the % NaHCO3 in the original mixture. To help you work through the calculations today, I've included a small audio lecture. This small lecture will: • provide a brief description of the procedure for the chemical reaction and data collection • provide a walk-through of how we use our data to complete the calculations and determine the percentage values for both Part A and Part B. You can use the same techniques to answer the questions in the postlab. Along with a copy of the audio lecture , you can find the virtual data for this experiment below. Use this data to complete the calculations. All of the "wet lab" experiments this semester have 2 components: The Data Table pages, and the Postlab Questions. You need to complete both parts of the Experiment, and turn them both in as your lab report.
